Under the Wave of Intelligent Manufacturing: How Can Dongguan Automation Equipment Manufacturers Leverage Industry Association Smart Diagnostics to Break Free from Data Silos and Accelerate Upgrade?

Amid the global acceleration toward intelligent and digital transformation, Dongguan – a key intelligent manufacturing hub in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area – is witnessing a growing number of automation equipment companies embracing change and innovation. Dongguan Donghong Automation Technology Co., Ltd. (“Donghong Automation”) stands out as a prime example. Recently, with the final review of its smart diagnostic report by the expert panel from the Dongguan Robot Industry Association, Donghong Automation has systematically clarified its digital upgrade roadmap. Founded in 2013 as a national high-tech enterprise, the company specializes in automatic high-speed chip inductor winding machines, automatic soldering machines, automatic coating machines, and automatic testing and packaging machines, with notable achievements in chip inductor winding, soldering, testing, and packaging – products that are exported worldwide. With downstream demand recovering in sectors like 3C electronics and new energy, Donghong Automation is leveraging smart diagnostics as a starting point to chart a new course in intelligent upgrading.

China's industrial automation market is currently experiencing structural recovery, with particularly strong demand for electronics, semiconductor, and AI-related equipment. However, opportunities come with challenges – manufacturing enterprises in transition must first resolve internal production bottlenecks to capture orders from high-growth sectors. Against this backdrop, the Dongguan Robot Industry Association organized expert teams to conduct on-site smart diagnostic services at Donghong Automation's production lines multiple times between June and August 2025. These visits were a key component of the “2024 Dongguan Social Organization Development Support Special Fund Project – Dongguan Robot Industry High-Quality Development Service Series.” The diagnostic results revealed that while Donghong Automation has accumulated technical advantages in six-axis industrial robot R&D, significant bottlenecks remain in material scheduling, assembly failure rates, and production data monitoring. The OEE of key injection molding machines was only 54%, logistics still relied on manual handling, and low equipment networking rates coupled with data silos severely constrained further improvements in production efficiency and quality.

To address these pain points, the association's expert panel, in collaboration with the company's technical team, proposed a phased, actionable systematic solution during review meetings. The first phase focuses on building a solid digital foundation – short-term priorities include deploying workshop-level industrial WiFi networks, installing edge computing gateways and IoT modules to break down information silos between automation equipment, and improving equipment networking rates and data collection capabilities. This foundational work is the first step toward intelligent upgrading and a prerequisite for all subsequent digital applications. By establishing a stable, high-speed workshop network environment, Donghong Automation will achieve real-time production data collection and transmission, providing accurate data support for management decision-making. Additionally, equipping key equipment with sensors to enable predictive maintenance will effectively reduce unplanned downtime and improve overall equipment effectiveness.

With the network foundation in place, Donghong Automation's upgrade path extends further into the software layer. The plan clearly calls for deploying a lightweight MES (Manufacturing Execution System) to achieve production transparency and address the risks of missed defects inherent in traditional quality sampling approaches. Introducing visual inspection technology to strengthen quality traceability will reduce downtime and increase per-capita output. In the medium to long term, the company plans to build digital twin models to optimize production processes, leverage data-driven decision-making, and combine these with predictive maintenance to ultimately achieve the leap from “manufacturing” to “intelligent manufacturing.” Notably, Donghong Automation has already accumulated core technical capabilities such as visual alignment algorithms in its automation equipment R&D, providing a solid technical foundation for MES deployment and visual inspection integration.

From an industry perspective, Donghong Automation's intelligent upgrading direction aligns closely with global industrial automation trends. The 2026 Automate show in Chicago sent a clear signal: automation investment is selectively returning, with concentrated demand for automation equipment in semiconductors, data centers, automotive, and life sciences. Physical AI is moving beyond humanoid robot discussions toward more concrete industrial perception, judgment, and execution scenarios. Meanwhile, the Dongguan municipal government has released the “Dongguan Global Smart Manufacturing Center Construction Master Plan (2026–2030),” explicitly aiming to establish over 200 “AI+Manufacturing” benchmark application scenarios and cultivate 50 advanced-level smart factories. Donghong Automation's transformation through visual inspection and MES systems is highly aligned with this direction, positioning the company to capitalize on policy incentives and market recovery to boost its competitiveness.

This smart diagnostic exercise has not only provided Donghong Automation with clear tactical guidance but has also reinforced the company's determination to deeply engage in the intelligent manufacturing arena. By achieving quantifiable improvements in key metrics – such as shortening order delivery cycles and reducing automation equipment failure rates – Donghong Automation is well-positioned to serve global customers with more agile response times and more stable product quality amid the recovering downstream demand in 3C electronics and new energy sectors. With the finalization of the diagnostic report and the gradual implementation of subsequent transformation projects, this Dongguan-based automation equipment company is embracing digital transformation with an open mindset. Leveraging the professional support of industry associations and its own R&D accumulation, Donghong Automation is leaving a solid footprint in enhancing the international competitiveness of China's intelligent manufacturing sector.
