What is a Common Mode Inductor?

A common mode inductor, also called a common mode choke, is a passive electronic component designed to suppress common-mode electromagnetic interference (EMI) in circuits. It is widely used in fields like power supplies, communications, and industrial control, and serves as a core device for ensuring the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of equipment.Working on the principle of electromagnetic induction, it features a key characteristic: high impedance to common-mode signals and low impedance to differential-mode signals. Common-mode signals refer to interfering signals that exist simultaneously and in the same direction on two wires of a circuit (e.g., live and neutral wires of a power cord), such as external electromagnetic radiation or circuit switching noise. The two sets of coils in the common mode inductor generate reverse magnetic fields that superimpose to form high impedance, blocking and filtering out common-mode signals.In contrast, differential-mode signals are useful working signals in the circuit (e.g., power current, data signals) that flow in opposite directions on the two wires. The magnetic fields from the two coils cancel each other out, creating low impedance that allows differential-mode signals to pass smoothly without affecting the normal operation of the equipment.Composed mainly of a magnetic core, windings, and insulating components, common mode inductors not only filter out interference to prevent equipment from radiating interference outward or being invaded by external interference, but also help equipment pass EMC certification and improve operational stability (e.g., ensuring the detection accuracy of medical equipment and the stability of industrial PLC control).
